Excerpts from the transcript of the 59th Annual Golden Globes ~ January 20, 2002

The Golden Globe goes to Jennifer Connelly for A Beautiful Mind. Jennifer seemed a little shocked to win just four minutes into the ceremony. "It's so fast!," she said. She thanked everybody, saying that Russell Crowe"...put me to the test each day."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The winner (Best Screenplay) was Akiva Goldsman for A Beautiful Mind. He joked "I'm a writer, so I'm going to read" before he pulled out a written list of his thank you's. He called Russell Crowe "truly great" and said the Crowe was his hero.
Annette Bening was there to present Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama. The winner was Russell Crowe for A Beautiful Mind.
Russell: "G'Day folks how ya doin?
Id like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press and all the hard working and passionate and very clever people who work for Imagine, Universal and Dreamworks.
Akiva Goldsman for his compelling screenplay and daily brilliance. Sylvia Nasar for an insightful and detailed book.
And John and Alicia for such a, living such an inspirational love story.
I want to thank Ed Harris , Christopher Plummer, Josh Lucas, Adam Goldberg, Jason Gray Stanford, Anthony Rapp, Paul Bettany and the amazing and courageous Jennifer Connelly.
And I want to thank Ron Howard for the privilege of working with him. I want to thank him for setting a platform, every single day, that allowed his actors to be adventurous, take risks and explore. I also want to thank him for his humility, his consummate skill and his honor as a man. Thanks Ron.
And also to Brian Glazer, Todd Haliwell, Karen Kehila, Aldrich Porter and an amazing crew, the people of New York and New Jersey, all the folks I work with, my family, my friends.
A Beautiful Mind is just a movie, it's just a piece of entertainment at the end of the day folks. But hopefully it helps us open our hearts, gives us a little more understanding, gives us a little more compassion. And also, hopefully, it gives us the belief, that in our lives, something extraordinary can always happen. Cheers."
Sydney Confidential
Rusty's on a long musical journey
By Fiona Connolly, Sarah Grant, Chris Barrett
From Yamba to Los Angeles and back to Newtown in less than a week, Russell Crowe is going to great lengths to further his musical career -- literally.
Hot off the plane from Hollywood's glittering Golden Globe Awards, Rusty pulled off a top-class gig with his band The Ordinary Fear of God on Wednesday night when he was unexpectedly joined on stage by legendary singer Elvis Costello.
Eclectic popstar Costello, who is in town for the Sydney Festival, thrilled Rusty's resident audience at Newtown venue The Vanguard when he accepted the invitation to sing a few numbers with the Hollywood star and singer.
Not a bad way to cure the post Golden Globes blues for the big guy, who missed out on the best male actor gong, which went to Philip Seymour Hoffman.
"It was a pretty big mission for him to do the show given he'd just flown in from LA, but having Elvis there perked him up considerably,'' Vanguard booker John Cass told Confidential.
Post-show, the unlikely duo headed up to the band room where they hung out sinking beers until about 2am.
Crowe heads back to The Vanguard next week before playing at Parliament House in Canberra for the Australia Day Live 06 concert. Rusty will play his first gig at annual Tamworth twang-fest, the Country Music Awards on January 28.
