SAG gets into act: Berry, Crowe win
By Dave McNary and Jill Feiwell
Muddying the Oscar outlook, Screen Actors Guild voters on Sunday tapped "Gosford Park" as surprise winner of its ensemble cast award, while Russell Crowe and Halle Berry took the top thesp nods for "A Beautiful Mind" and "Monster's Ball," respectively.
Crowe's win reinforces his status as the front-runner, topping Kevin Kline for "Life as a House"; Sean Penn, "I Am Sam"; Denzel Washington, "Training Day"; and Tom Wilkinson, "In the Bedroom." Crowe now has a strong chance of becoming the first actor to win back-to-back Oscars since Tom Hanks took the awards for "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump."
Continuing his low-key behavior after his recent spat at the BAFTA Awards, Crowe told the audience at the Shrine Auditorium, "This is a great job. I encourage you to give everything you can to the job."

Crowe urges Kiwis to stick to the script
Sydney, March 11 - Adopted Aussie Russell Crowe is going in to bat for New Zealand at the cricket World Cup, switching allegiance to the Black Caps in South Africa after close friend Shane Warne was booted out of the Australian side for failing a drugs test.
The Oscar winner sent the New Zealanders a message urging them to believe in themselves, as they did in the VB Series here last year, ahead of tonight's crunch match against the world champion Australians in Port Elizabeth.
New Zealand team manager Jeff Crowe said his cousin kept in regular contact despite his heavy travel schedule.
"He and I had a quick chat and he's wished us all the best," Jeff Crowe said.
"I think, cricket-wise, if Shane is not in the side he'd go for New Zealand. He told us to have the belief like we had last summer."

Russell Crowe's been well and truly licked. And the culprits close to home.
Locals in Coffs Harbour on the NSW North Coast have been stymied in their attempt to collect the entire set of Australian Legends of the Screen stamps.
One woman who requested a set of four stamps at the Coffs Harbour post office was told they had plenty of Cate Blanchetts, Nicole Kidmans and Geoffrey Rushs but absolutely no Russell Crowes.
"Russell must be very popular in Coffs,'' the collector said.
"Yes,'' replied the staffer, "particularly with his mum."
It was Russell's mum Jocelyn who had bought them all!
